Zemenar

Zemenar is the primary antagonist in the first three (chronologically) books of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede. He was the leader of the Society of Wizards, who have been seeking to obtain all magic in the world for themselves. Their plotting in the first book (Dealing with Dragons) leads to the death of Tokoz, King of the Dragons. Zemenar allies himself with another dragon, Woraug, intending to make him the new King of the Dragons in exchange for access to the King's Crystal, which will let them locate every piece of magic in the world and take it for themselves. Unluckily for Zemenar, his plans are soon discovered and thwarted by Cimorene, princess of the dragon Kazul. In the process, Zemenar is melted for the first time (though not permanently) by one of Cimorene's allies. After this, Kazul becomes the new King of the Dragons and immediately bans all wizards from entering the Mountains of Morning.
During the second book (Searching for Dragons), Zemenar and the other wizards capture Kazul and imprison her within a powerful new spell. He then pays a visit to King Mendanbar of the Enchanted Forest, attempting to cause trouble between Mendanbar and the dragons by blaming the dragons for the destruction of parts of the Enchanted Forest. In actuality, Zemenar and the other wizards are responsible. Mendanbar soon discovers this and takes part in a mission to rescue King Kazul. In the resulting confrontation, Mendanbar melts Zemenar again. Following this, the wizards are dealt another setback when Mendanbar (with help from the magician Telemain) sets up a spell to prevent them from stealing magic from the Enchanted Forest.
Zemenar remains offscreen for the duration of the third book (Calling on Dragons). During this time, he prepares for and later leads a mission to the Enchanted Forest, which results in the castle being surrounded by the same bubble spell used to confine Kazul in the previous book. Mendanbar is then imprisoned within a spell that leaves him alive and awake, but unaging. Zemenar also sets up a simulacrum within the castle to act as a decoy for anyone who somehow manages to enter the castle. He also manages to obtain the Key to the Castle, and hides it within the Caves of Chance, guarded by a Quozzel (a creature which appears to be a mass of living black jelly). After exiting the caves, he is promptly eaten by Kazul.
In the fourth book (Talking to Dragons), he does not appear in person, havin gbeen eaten in the previous book by the King of the Dragons, Kazul. However, he is referred to on several occasions.
