The Ziesel reaction is a chemical reaction invented by S. Ziesel in 1886. It is used determine the number of methoxy (-OCH3) groups in an organic compound.[1] The reaction is carried out by heating the compound with hydriodic acid, forming an alcohol and iodomethane. This is distilled into a solution of silver nitrate and precipitates silver iodide. By filtering and weighing this solution it is possible to calculate the number of iodine atoms and hence methoxy groups.
The test should not be confused with the Zeisel determination used to test for the presence of ethers.
