Established in 1981, privately held RAD Data Communications is internationally recognized as a leading manufacturer of network access equipment for data communications and telecommunications applications. The company offers a wide range of access product solutions that serve the technological and business requirements of service providers, carriers and enterprises. The company's installed base exceeds 9,000,000 units and includes more than 150 carriers and operators worldwide. RAD has 23 offices and more than 200 local distributors in 105 countries.

RAD's current corporate aim is to provide access solutions for both existing infrastructures and future architectural models, such as IP/MPLS.

RAD incorporates in its products a broad range of technologies: Ethernet/IP/MPLS; TDM over IP (TDMoIP®) pseudowire circuit emulation and clock synchronization over packet-switched networks; ATM; E1/E3 (E-carrier), T1/T3 (T-carrier); broadband SDH/SONET transmission; xDSL; A-bis and A-ter optimization for 2G and 3G cellular networks; point-to-point wireless multiplexing; fiber optics; analog and digital voice compression; Frame Relay; ISDN; rate, interface and protocol conversion; bridging and routing; ASICs; and integrated network management.

RAD’s customers include organizations in industry, finance, the military, education, transportation, commerce, public utilities and telecommunications. The company also works closely with leading carriers and service providers in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania to supply system solutions and expertise for building public and private access networks. Joint ventures for overseas manufacturing of RAD products have been established in the U.S., Brazil, India, and China.


[edit] Research, Development and Standardization Efforts

Almost 30% of the company employees are involved in R&D. All research, development and manufacturing is performed in-house.

RAD has recently (2005) concentrated its efforts to bridge the gap between services originating in existing TDM and ATM-based networks and their transport over next generation packet switched networks. To this end, RAD has made key contributions to standardization efforts involving the transport of legacy voice and data traffic, using TDM and ATM pseudowires over IP/MPLS networks for fixed wire and mobile applications.

In 1999, the company unveiled at ITU Telecom World in Geneva its pioneering TDM over IP technology (TDMoIP) and received US patent grants for this technology. RAD has authored a number of Internet drafts in the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) and several draft recommendations in the ITU (International Telecommunication Union). In particular, RAD edited and contributed to two new ITU-T recommendations – Y.1413 for TDM-MPLS interworking and Y.1414 for voice services over MPLS – both of which were approved by the ITU-T. RAD’s TDMoIP draft was adopted as a PWE3 Working Group draft in the IETF.


RAD is an active member of the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) and contributed to the new MEF 8 Implementation Agreement for Emulation of PDH Circuits over Metro Ethernet Networks. RAD also remains active in the MPLS Forum, which has now joined with the Frame Relay Forum and ATM Forum to become the MFA, one of the industry’s most significant standards bodies.

Although worldwide migration to packet-based infrastructure is picking up steam, the installed base of TDM, DSL and ATM networks remains huge and is still expanding. RAD continues to serve this large market, developing specialized products that enable carriers and enterprises to leverage their existing network topology to offer new types of services at lower cost. These include modems, multiplexers, digital cross-connects, and integrated devices with support for existing network transport environments, as well as next generation networking functionality.


Examples of RAD’s originality in R&D reach back to the company’s early years. In 1989, RAD introduced the world's smallest modem, the SRM-3, an achievement that was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.

The company earned ISO 9001 certification for its research and development and manufacturing facilities in 1996, and ISO 9001:2000 certification in 2003. For waste reduction and the prevention of pollution, RAD was awarded ISO 14001 in 2001 (see List of ISO standards).

Several independent companies form the RAD Group, which has no holding company but is strategically guided by its founders. Each company in the group (including RAD Data Communications, Radware, RADVISION, Radcom and others) operates autonomously under a common strategic umbrella. According to the group's strategic approach, a new company is established when a market opportunity is identified – requiring a technology, marketing approach or corporate culture that does not exist in any of the other companies.

Six RAD Group companies are traded on the Nasdaq Stock Market in the U.S.; the others are privately held by the Group’s founders and several venture capital firms.
