Zhang San
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zhāng Sān (Traditional Chinese: 張三; Simplified Chinese: 张三; literally: "Zhāng Three"), Lǐ Sì (Chinese: 李四; literally: "Lǐ Four"), Wáng Wǔ (Chinese: 王五; literally: "Wáng Five") and Zhào Liù (Traditional Chinese: 趙六; Simplified Chinese: 赵六; literally: "Zhào Six") or Wáng Èr Mázi (王二麻子) are placeholder names (metasyntactic variables) in the Chinese language, much like "Tom, Dick and Harry" or "foobar" in English.
Zhāng, Lǐ, Wáng and Zhào are commonplace surnames in China. However, in Chinese the saying "Zhāng Sān, Lǐ Sì, Wáng Èr Mázi" is used not only for people, but for anything.
