Zákamenné is the biggest village in the Orava region in the northern part of Slovakia. Zákamenné lies in north-western part of the Orava. It belongs to protected landscape area Horná Orava and special protected area Horná Orava. Neighbour villages with Zákamenné are Oravská Lesná, Novoť, Lomná, Breza, Krušetnica and Ujsoly in Poland.

In historical records the village was first mentioned in 1615.The village was founded in 1615 on feast of holy Jacob (28 July), but the first written mention is dated on 16. July 1615.

The municipality lies at an altitude of 680 - 1156 metres and covers an area of 42.902km². It has a population of about 5005 people.

  • Nižný koniec - entrance into village from Námestovo and Lokca. In this part are two banks supermarket, restaurant, pension, ski-lift, shops, health care and another services
  • Poriečie - direction Novoť, to the polish border, village Ujsoly and frontier crossing

  • Zákamenné belongs to protected landscape area Horná Orava and special protected area Horná Orava.
  • In the village are two ski-lifts: 1500 Kýčera and ski-lift 800 at Prípor hill
  • The highest peak of Zákammené is Úšust (1156 m n.m.). It lies at the borded with Poland and it is possible to see West Tatras, Pilsko and Malá Fatra mountains in good weather conditions from this peak. At the polish side of mountain Úšust is found original fir-beech primeval forest.
  • Accommodation is possible in four pensions and two hostels

  • Ján Vojtaššák - bishop in the region Spiš during the years between World wars and after II. World war. He was martyred by communist regime. Pope John Paul II. started process of his beatification.
  • Milan Čič - politician, former president of constitution court, presently advisor of president of Slovak republic
  • Martin Bajčičák - Slovakian cross country skier who has been competing since 1994. Bajčičák's best finish at the Winter Olympics was also in the 15 km + 15 km double pursuit, though it was eighth in 2006.
